Reiki (pronounced Ray-Kee) is a healing technique brought forth in the nineteenth century by Dr. Mikao Usui. It is thought to be based on an ancient Tibetan Buddhist method of healing. After being attuned to Reiki energy, a Reiki practitioner can deliver this energy (described as spiritually guided life force energy) to others. Most often the energy is transferred through the hands of the practitioner, although it can be transmitted in other ways as well.

Reiki energy can relieve pain, reduce tension, and increase the life force of animal patients. Like all healing methods, Reiki must be appropriately used. Animals should never be forced to have a Reiki treatment. They must be free to walk away before treatment or at any point during treatment. If Reiki is being administered to an animal who is unconscious, paralyzed, or otherwise unable to move away, the guardian should be alert for muscle twitches, slight movements, or any feelings which indicate that treatment should be terminated.

Reiki treatments may not be compatible with homeopathy, acupuncture, and other energetic forms of therapy.
